STORIES FROM

NICOLE DUGAS

Barbecuties, Austin, Texas

WE GOT A PERMIT ON SIXTH STREET, and my sister and I were wondering what we were going to sell. We went through the whole line: gross hot dogs, wurst, tacos, and then we both thought about my dad’s barbecue. He has barbecued forever with the Little Smokeys, so that was always a big part of our life. Whenever we didn’t have much money, he would always have the thirty-dollar Little Smokey; and then as his business grew, you saw the smokers getting bigger and bigger. So we decided we were going to name it TD’s after my dad, Tom Dugas. We talked with him about it, and he was like, that is not a good idea on Sixth Street; you’re not going to sell anything. You’re two pretty girls—why don’t you just use it? So we decided to use it.

First it was Grills Gone Wild, and then it was the Smokettes, and it wasn’t until I was having a conversation with the owner of Best Wurst—we were throwing back names—and he came up with the Barbecuties. So we had the girls wear little red dresses. We wanted sort of a fifties style, so we found these with the big buttons on them.
